Introduction

The King’s Speech delivered on 17 July 2024 sets out the aims of the Bill in summary:

‘My Government will seek to strengthen the border and make streets safer. A Bill will be introduced to modernise the asylum and immigration system, establishing a new Border Security Command and delivering enhanced counter terror powers to tackle organised immigration crime [Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill].’

The focus of the new Bill is therefore the strengthening of border security, in the wake of the failure of the Rwanda scheme.

This webinar will aim to summarise the content of the Bill, highlighting in particular the proposed changes to the asylum system, and the system of penalties and deterrents that are set to target those who profit from the small boats crossing the Channel. It will look at what those changes are likely to mean for those already in the UK, as well as those aiming to come in the near future, and point to areas to watch in the coming months.

What You Will Learn

This short webinar will cover the following:

  • Key changes proposed to the asylum process
  • The return of the fast-track
  • What this means for the Rwanda scheme
  • What are the penalties likely to be imposed and on whom
  • What more to look out for

This pre-recorded webinar will be available to view from Tuesday 28th January 2025
